5 Tips to Bring More Life Balance
Wearing multiple hats in life can get extremely exhausting and draining that at certain points, balancing your career and family life can just be too difficult. So you’d probably end up taking work with you back home, sleeping late at night polishing some work off while waking up very early in the morning to fix breakfast for your kids. And even when you’re on a “supposed” family vacation, you’re still squeezing in a few hours tinkering with your laptop trying to beat a deadline or check some projects that it doesn’t even feel like you’re on a vacation at all.
And to think it’s not just career or family that you need to give time to, you also have to at least bring in some “me” time into the picture. The fact of the matter is that you get too preoccupied with work and family responsibilities that “me” time goes to the least of of your priorities, right? Added to another fact that you have to also achieve balance in all aspects of your life – mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. So how do you achieve more balance into your life?
- Put yourself first.
This is probably the hardest thing you could ever do when you know there are a lot of other more important things that you’re tempted to finish and attend to. Say what again? A lot of other more important things? So are you trying to say you are putting more importance on other things over yourself? Now it’s time to shift that paradigm and give yourself worth.
Social norm dictates that if you put yourself first, you’re being selfish. So for the longest period of time, we want to please the society by giving all our attention to others first before we do to ourselves. But have you ever noticed the pre-flight safety demonstration on the plane wherein the flight attendant tells passengers that in case of emergency, you have to put the mask on your face first before putting it on your child? Ever wondered why that is? It’s because you can only save others if you save yourself first. In the same way that you have to take care of yourself first before you can take care of other people. You have to love yourself first before you can love other people. You are important. You are worthy of your time. Hence, you need to give time to yourself first before you give time to other stuff. So the next time that you’re tempted to skip a 30-minute gym workout because you still have to finish a task at work, think again.
- Manage your time well.
One of the major reasons people find it too difficult to balance their life is because they fail to establish a system that allows them to manage their time well. That said, you need to be able to breakdown your day according to the different tasks you have to do both at work and at home. And oftentimes, it helps if you write down the things that you need to do for the day in order to for you to keep track of your progress and measure it.
- Don’t forget about your spiritual life.
When you get too busy during the day, the most common thing that is often set aside is the spiritual aspect. Just because you’re not trying to beat any deadline with your spirituality like you do with work doesn’t mean you can’t prioritize it. In fact, a simple, heartfelt prayer of gratitude is a great way to start your day right. Other ways to develop your spiritual life is through meditation and reading self-development books.
- Do not mix family time with work.
The time you spend with your family is sacred. The amount of time can always be negotiated, but the quality of time can never be compromised. When you spend time with your family and loved ones, all of your attention should also be directed to them. You shouldn’t just be physically there, but everything else has to be present – your mind, your body, and your spirit. And when you say you’re going on a vacation, for crying out loud, take a break. Leave your work for the time being. And just have fun!
- Sleep is a priority.
People would rather just get an hour of sleep rather than miss a deadline. But you have to keep in mind that sleep and rest are very important. Again, they may not seem that deadly (for now), but lack of sleep can simply affect your day keeping you all the more stressed, losing focus, and becoming unproductive during the day. It’s perfect when you’re able to get 8 hours of sleep a day. If not, then get at least 5-6 hours a day or a power nap in the afternoon to help you get going all through the rest of the day.[btx_image image_id=”1163″ link=”/” position=”right” size=”medium” on_click=”none”][/btx_image]
These tips could really seem initially unimportant because they may not have a direct impact on your life, but you would actually be surprised to find more balance into your life by following these simple things.
